Have you ever heard of the term “Doomsday Preppers”? A popular television show highlights these individuals who believe disaster is imminent. They are so convinced that natural disasters, plagues, and famine will strike, they are preparing for it now. Their plans are meticulous and elaborate—underground bunkers, food stockpiling, and even crisis drills become their life’s focus. Why?
They are convinced something bad is going to happen. They want to be ready. Funny thing is, they’re kind of right. According to the Bible, judgment is coming. But, doomsday prepping is not how you prepare for the Lord’s judgment. Sure, we should all use common sense and have supplies on hand, as well as a plan for natural disasters. However, when the time comes for the Lord’s judgment, the most secure bunker is no guarantee.
We must prepare our spirit. The safest place to be is in “right-standing” (a.k.a. righteousness) with God through Jesus Christ. Ezekiel 33:11 says God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked; His desire is for the wicked to change. His judgments are a form of grace–a chastisement designed to bring the sinner to repentance. Those who are already righteous have no need to fear. The Lord has not appointed the righteous to wrath.
1 Thessalonians 5:3-10, KJV
“For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober…For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.”
God promises to protect those who abide and trust in Him. Share the peace you have through Christ with others so they too may experience shelter during times of trouble.
Psalm 91:7-11, KJV
“A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.”
