A commitment is only priority when you decide to honor it, no matter what. If you find yourself breaking a commitment regularly, ask yourself: Why am I doing this? Did I promise because I’m afraid of disapproval? Am I agreeing to something just because everyone else is? Those are not good reasons to commit. They are based on exterior motives. True commitment comes from within. It’s driven by your convictions.
When you are motivated by your own beliefs, nothing can stop you. When you must be motivated by others, everything stops you. The dog ran away. I overslept. It’s too far. It’s too hard and all the other good excuses. But, why waste your time (which is really your life) on vain pursuits? Focus your efforts towards goals that matter to you. Can’t tell if you’re really committed? Don’t rely on your opinion, examine your behavior. It always tells the truth.

Now, consider your decision to follow Christ. Are you willing to serve him no matter what? Your commitment to Christ will be challenged. Family problems will challenge it. Career goals will challenge it. Financial needs will challenge it. Here’s the catch: If you leave Christ to fix your problems, you will drown in your troubles. But, if you maintain your commitment to Christ, he will deliver you.

Matthew 10:22 – Everyone will hate you because you are committed to me. But the person who patiently endures to the end will be saved. (GOD’S WORD Translation)

Matthew 10:36-39 – “Well-meaning family members can be your worst enemies. If you prefer father or mother over me, you don’t deserve me. If you prefer son or daughter over me, you don’t deserve me. If you don’t go all the way with me, through thick and thin, you don’t deserve me. If your first concern is to look after yourself, you’ll never find yourself. But if you forget about yourself and look to me, you’ll find both yourself and me.” (The Message)
